![]() It was made clear to the private patients that they were being “fitted in” around patients with a booked appointment time, so while they wouldn’t get their scan the minute they walked in, it would usually be a twenty-minute wait at most. These extra MRIs were slotted in between the booked NHS MRIs, where the NHS patients waited four to six months for routine MRIs and two to three weeks for urgent MRIs. The extra money allowed us to fund additional MRI lists for NHS patients who needed urgent scans. The patients in her clinic required an MRI scan as part of their workup, and the MRI department was happy to get the money generated because the MRIs were effectively done on demand, we were able to charge two to three times the usual fee, which worked out to about £1,500 per MRI. On a particular afternoon of the week, we offered “same-day” access for a certain private patient clinic. I really don’t know what to say, but I am saved by the customer who picked up the check for the whole table. Old Lady: “Use it to buy yourself something nice!” She proceeds to place into my hand… a quarter. Old Lady: “And here, because you’ve been just so wonderful this evening!” Then, the old woman calls me over and takes my hand. The family pays the bill by card and chooses not to tip. She’s the matriarch and apparently mostly deaf, so the family has been ordering for her and keeping her happy. The family at the table has an old woman with them. A family has eaten quite an expensive meal, and they’ve all been very complimentary about my service, which I have to say, based on how we’re trained, is of a very high standard. I’m a waiter at a small but high-end restaurant.
